The Long Wait for The Long Walk
I am so excited for the upcoming release of The Long Walk! It was one of my earliest encounters with literary master Stephen King, and it's (in my humble opinion) one of his best two books. I will say though, over the years I have at times been happy that this particular book wasn't made into a movie. Some of his movie adaptations are amazing, but others have missed the mark by miles. So, part of me didn't mind this gem not being adapted. After all, what if it ended up like Ender's Game, one of the best books with the worst movie adaptation I can think of? And I'm not going to lie, when I saw the terms "star-studded cast" attached to this project, I was immediately concerned. Sometimes those words mean a way to get people to watch a movie that wasn't done well just because of the people starring in it (like Ender's Game, I so hated that movie!). But, I went to the theater to watch the new Jurassic World movie the other day and finally saw a trailer for The Long Walk (I know, I could have just gone to YouTube to see it, but I had such mixed feelings). OMG guys, it looks amazing! Some of the cast look a bit older than I had pictured them when reading the book, but the acting looks so good that I don't think this detail is going to bother me. I hope they don't remove the gruesomeness from the story to try to make it more palatable, because the fact that it is so gruesome is what makes it so impactful. As we continue to see more aspects of what is normally seen in dystopian literature in our everyday lives, we need the brutality thrown at us to remind us of the horrible outcomes complacency and not standing up for what is right can deliver. I hope you're all as excited as I am to see this, and if you haven't read it yet I cannot recommend highly enough that you do that immediately!
If you're interested in learning more about this adaptation and some interesting history related to it, I enjoyed this article.
